Preparing for the hard work ahead

Over a year has passed since the events at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) put a temporary hold on operations at the plant, but as the world's only working deep geologic repository for transuranic waste, WIPP was very much a topic of conversation at WM Symposia's 2015 Waste Management Conference, held March 15-19 in Phoenix, Ariz. A number of conference sessions included discussions on what is known about what happened at WIPP, the plans to bring the plant back into service, and the lessons learned from the two incidents that shut it down. WIPP was also an important subject for the conference's international attendees, many of whom are actively working to build a deep geologic repository in their own countries.
