Civil nuclear export regs revised

The Department of Energy, through the National Nuclear Security Administration, has updated its regulations regarding the export of unclassified U.S. nuclear technology and assistance. According to a final rule issued on February 7, the update to 10 CFR Part 810, Assistance to Foreign Atomic Energy Activities, is intended to bring the regulations into closer harmony with current global civil nuclear trade practices and nonproliferation norms and to "update the activities and technologies subject to the Secretary of Energy's specific authorization and DOE reporting requirements." While some adjustments to Part 810 were made in 1993 and again in 2000, this latest update marks the first comprehensive revision since 1986. The modified regulations went into effect on March 25.
