NRC staff proposes doubling license terms for uranium recovery facilities

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff is proposing that the maximum term of licenses and license renewals for uranium recovery (UR) facilities be increased from 10 to 20 years. The staff presented its proposal to the commissioners in a policy issue paper dated August 29 and added to the ADAMS public document library (accession number ML17093A951) on September 15. "Extending the license term for UR facilities to 20 years would not change the health and safety requirements currently in licenses," the paper states. "A 20-year license would grant the same authorizations and have the same conditions as a 10-year license."
