Credit Assessments Will Play Heavily In Nuke Loan Guarantees

A credit assessment of each proposed nuclear plant vying for loan guarantees will play a large part in the Department of Energy's evaluation of the projects, both for determining the default risk of each project and subsequentlyrnassigning credit subsidy costs to loan guarantee recipients, Fitch Ratings agency said late last month. Each of the loan guarantee applicants must obtain an independent credit assessment from Fitch or one of the other ratings agencies, which will essentially assess the viability and default risk of each of the new plants. In the somewhat stunted financial investment market afflicting capital projects right now, these individual credit assessments will not just examine the regulatory and construction risks of the projects themselves, but the overall financial standing and credit ratings of the companies hoping to build the new plants.
