NRC UPDATING ADVANCED REACTOR SAFETY AND SECURITY REGULATIONS

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission took steps to prepare for the potential review of advanced nuclear power reactor licenses last week, releasing a draft policy statement on safety and security measures with regard to advanced reactors. The intent of the policy update is to reconcile the previous advanced reactor safety policy, which was designed before Sept. 11, 2001, with current safety and security expectations for existing and new nuclear reactors. The policy has not been updated since 1996.
