NRC MOVES FORWARD ON FUKUSHIMA RECOMMENDATIONS Effort Could Delay Other NRC Activities

More than a month after the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's post-Fukushima task force released a report detailing potential actions, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced a path forward on the task force recommendations Aug. 19. The commission directed staff to engage with stakeholders in assessing the task force recommendations and by Sept. 9 provide a view on any recommendations that should be implemented without delay. By Oct. 3, the staff must prioritize the recommendations, describe all agency actions that should be taken and provide a schedule for interacting with the public and the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards. However, the staff will examine separately the recommendation for an overhaul of the NRC's regulatory approach and provide a paper on that in 18 months.
