House lawmakers are seeking an explanation for Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Gregory Jaczko's use of emergency authority during the Fukushima crisis in Japan, including his controversial decision to recommend a 50-mile evacuation zone around the Fukushima plant for U.S. citizens. In recent weeks, both lawmakers and activists have seized upon that decision to call for a change in the NRC's current 10-mile evacuation zone around U.S. plants. Jaczko did not consult with any of the other commissioners before making that recommendation, Commissioner William Ostendorff told reporters following a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee hearing with four NRC commissioners this week.
