Decommissioning: the time is now

Italy's nuclear plants have been walled up for over a decade. Now the government has put forward plans to create a national repository for nuclear waste and carry out immediate decommissioning. Nuclear power was banned in Italy in 1987, when a referendum was held following the Chernobyl accident. As a result, three plants - Latina, Caorso and Trino - were shut down immediately and construction work on others was stopped. A fourth reactor at Garigliano had been shut in 1982 for other reasons.
