Chernobyl — the Alliance study

The international Alliance consortium has presented a $1 . 6 billion scheme tc solve the worries caused by the present sarcophagus containing the Unit 4 reactor at Chernobyl. It is some nine years since the Chernobyl disaster and the Unit 4 reactor problems have remained unsolved. As is well known, a covering sarcophagus was constructed under emergency conditions to isolate the damaged reactor. The reactor remains plus the emergency containment is now known as Ukritiye and contains more than 100 tonnes of nuclear fuel, including more than 400 kg of plutonium, yielding a radioactive source greater than 4 million curies. The sarcophagus was constructed to last some 30 years but it is considered it may collapse at any time and, in any case, it was not designed to resist earthquakes.
