Radiation Chemistry in the UK - Past, Present & Future

Radiation chemistry is not an abstract subject of only academic interest. It has applications in a broad range of areas: the nuclear industry, medicine, and agriculture to name but a few. Without a doubt, most of the applications and issues associated with radiation chemistry are encountered within the nuclear industry whereas, in other industries, relatively fewer radiation chemistry issues are encountered. It is true to say that radiation is present at all stages in the nuclear fuel cycle, from ore extraction through to final waste and it causes issues of concern at all stages. (Compare this situation with other areas of application where radiation can be used to our advantage; for example in medical applications).
