Assessment process on track for potential new nuclear units

The generic design assessment (GDA) process which could pave the way for construction of a new generation of nuclear power plants in the UK is on track for completion within the next two years. Two reactor designs are under assessment as part of the GDA process in the UK. They are: Areva and EDF's European Pressurised Water Reactor and Westinghouse Electric Company's AP1000. Progress and related information about the process was published on 27th July in a joint report, covering the period April to June 2009, by the UK's Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and the Environment Agency.
