摘要

The nuclear industry has always been focused on innovation. Harnessing the energy of the atom presented real technical challenges in the 1940s, challenges which were overcome by comprehensive research and development programmes. At the start of the nuclear industry in the UK it was the UKAEA which was given the responsibility of delivering the R&D programmes, and over a short period of time rapid progress was made to underpin the reactor technologies which for many years produced energy for the UK electricity grid.
