Over the past 60 years, the United Kingdom, like most other major industrial economies, has built up a legacy of higher activity radioactive waste from nuclear energy, industrial, medical and defence programmes. In July 2014 the Government set out a revised geological disposal policy, in line with internationally agreed best practice, for the permanent disposal of these materials. This article explains how that policy will be implemented.
