Wet scrubbers have been used for many years for the filtration and purification of exhaust gas streams in many heavy industries, such as the processing, chemical, fossil and nuclear industry. In waste incinerators, wet scrubbers are one of the key components to treat dust and acidic gases in the flue gas [1]. Moreover, they turn out to be not only efficient for the retention of dust from combustion gases but also to desulfurise the exhaust gas from coal fired power plants [2]. The nuclear industry is familiar with pool scrubbers as part of the severe accident management. The mitigation of the source term in the form of aerosols has been investigated for different parts inside a nuclear power plant. The release path of particles after a core-melt through a steam generator tube rupture and a stuck-open safety relief valve in pressurised water reactors (PWR) [3], or the flow path through the suppression pools of a boiling water reactor (BWR) [4], are just two examples worth mentioning.
