What is effective route guides for navigations assist?

When people navigate a route to reach a destination, they use various kinds of resources, such as maps and guidance from other people. We investigated how people create such external resources and how they use these resources. Experiments showed that effective route guides are those that help a person form useful cognitive maps in the environment, and that people use various representations de- pending on the environment to create such route guides. We also observed that subjects obtained other resources in the environment and additionally use for choosing their routes.
