Four years ago, I presented a paper at Insight which was somewhat controversial at the time. I proposed that the consumer wipes market would grow rapidly and increase in performance and profitability. At a time when air-laid diaper cores were right around the corner and most spunlace was used for surgical drapes and gowns, this was controversial-especially remembering that ten years earlier, Dow had launched an incredibly successful nonwoven wipe, called Spiffits, which went from zero to $100 million in sales and then back to zero in about three to four years. In 2000, I was convinced that finally the technology, economics and consumer needs had converged and that this time nonwovens-based wipes were here to stay.
