摘要

Relationships between nonprofits and their various constituencies, a focus on faith-based services, and attention to policy-relevant questions in the United States are three themes woven throughout this issue.rnWe lead off with a timely and highly original piece, "U.S. Nonprofit Organizations' Demand for Temporary Foreign Professionals," by Mary Tschirhart and Lois Wise. Much of the national focus on immigration in the United States has been on illegal immigration and the alleged crowding out of low-wage, low-skill native workers. Tschirhart and Wise examine the demand by U.S. nonprofits for foreign professionals to fill specialized and managerial positions on a temporary basis. It is unlikely that anyone in education, health care, the arts, or numerous other nonprofit program sectors is unaware of the importance of this issue.rnThe authors find "an association between strategy to insource foreign labor and organizational resource level, mission, occupational need, and wage offer." Their conclusion: "Our findings suggest that government visa policies and practices affect labor pools for nonprofit organizations." This looks like the start of a new research thread in nonprofit studies that can be expected to yield further interesting work in the future.
