Lyndon baines johnson never liked to be out of the limelight. Now, 23 years after his fatal heart attack, the 36th president has brought himself back to hie—thanks to the Johnson Library's release of tapes LBJ made of private conversations he had in early 1964. The tapes will surprise younger Americans nursed on Oliver Stone's "JFK." They show that three months after John Kennedy's murder, LBJ was scarcely hellbent on plunging the nation into war in Southeast Asia—a contention Stone makes in his movie.
