Dialogue, however painful, is ultimately healing-so believe those who worship at the shrine of Saint Oprah. Yet the truth, as talk TV illustrates daily, is that conversation doesn't necessarily lead to conciliation; it often is just another name for conflict. So when Bill Clinton suggests a national talkfest as a way of lifting "the heavy burden of race from our children's future," skepticism is in order. Still, with a passion usually seen only in the aftermath of a riot, those who profess concern over racial estrangement are pushing the issue onto the national agenda. Last week, House Speaker Newt Gingrich followed the president's June 14 race speech with his own 10-point plan for racial progress.
