If you're in a retirement plan that includes company stock, you owe Jeff Skilling and Ken Lay a vote of thanks. Due to their failures, 401(k)s are better today. Their own workers lost out. Management's bullishness (and bull) encouraged employees to stake their futures on Enron stock, which made up 57.7 percent of their company plan. Some workers kept all their money there, and everybody lost, big time. But Enron wasn't alone in bungling its 401(k). You could find the same bad, or thoughdess, practices throughout corporate America. Lawsuits are raining down on firms that weren't watching out for their workers' interests. Besides Enron, the list includes WorldCom, Dynegy, Global Crossing, Delphi and many more.
