Joan hocky was per-fectly happy with the nanny she hired to care for her infant son, Ben. The caregiver was responsive and responsible, and Hocky returned to her part-time job confident that her baby was in good hands. Even so, when Ben was 11 months old, she enrolled him in a popular baby-sitting cooperative in Brooklyn, where a dozen families share three full-time caregivers. Hocky liked the idea of Ben's being exposed to different toys and activities. And she worried about his being isolated with a nanny.
