It was never clear exactly what les aspin was doing in South Vietnam 30 years ago, or who he was doing it for, except he obviously belonged there as so many other Americans in-country obviously did not. Les's disorganized personality and inquisitive mind were ideally suited to grappling with the systemic disorder of the war, a chaos of fact and counterfact and pure fiction. I think he viewed internal contradiction as a natural condition of life, not a situation to be mastered but one to be pondered. Defense policy was the great obsession of his life, and he first encountered its practical application in Vietnam's hall of mirrors. A young psychoanalyst studying at the feet of Freud himself could have had no more promising beginning.
