For decades, the people of Burma have suffered at the hands of their repressive rulers. But when U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived here last week, the regime finally seemed willing to play nice. Clinton's visit-the first by an American secretary of state in more than half a century-came roughly a year after the Burmese government released opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, who was long under house arrest. In the past, Suu Kyi has spurned compromise with the regime, but now she has signaled confidence in President Thein Seta.
