The first chapter of this book begins/The story of the building of the Seaward Bush railway is one of slow motion.' It took 25 years to build the 54 kilometre long line! In fact, as well as the building, the operation and demise of this southern Southland railway are also episodes of slow motion.This was further compounded when the last train to leave Tokanui on 2 April 1966 had difficulty leaving the town due to oil being poured onto the rails three times by protestors.
