A First for New Zealand

First of the type to be installed in New Zealand, level crossing barriers as commonly installed in the United States were brought into use at Mangere Road crossing near Auckland on October 4. Consisting of a steel arm on each side of the tracks lowered by electric track-circuit relays on the approach of a train, the installation and its efficacy in preventing accidents are under observation by both railway and road authorities. Immediately adjacent to the road crossing was Mangere station, which had opened for business on 18 September 1908. Prior to this there had been no intermediate stations between Otahuhu and Papatoetoe.
