For sixty years the signal boxes at Petone and Taita have guided train movements through the Hutt Valley. With their days now drawing to a close, Robert Arnold documents the operations at both these boxes. Every day, thousands of Hutt Valley rail commuters depend on the Petone and Taita signal boxes for their safe passage to and from Wellington, yet only a small percentage of them realise the vital role the boxes play in Hutt Valley railway operations. Although the areas both boxes control have been drastically pared back in recent times, and the workload they handle has diminished from their heyday, they still play an important part in keeping the trains moving.
