The photograph that accompanied the obituary to Ian Bullock in the last issue of Observer created a lot of interest, with many readers being able to identify members of the Westland Rail Tour party. Observer 77 of July - September 1958 featured the late John Stichbury's account of that tour, and the article is reproduced together with additional information from YARN. The Westland Rail Tour was the first large-scale rail tour organised in New Zealand. The Westland Rail Tour (WRT) of 1957 and 1958 was from the start a kind of test case. In the finish, it proved a complete and full test of the whole Rail Tour organisation. It is my pleasant duty to report that the tour was a tremendous success. It proved that the longer fortnight "vacation-length" tours are within our grasp.
