Continuing on the theme of featuring images from our photographic archive situated at the Thomas McGavin building at Petone, this issue concludes the series from the Wallace Sutherland collection. We are indebted to member Keith Hamilton who has been able to pass on some further background about Wallace. As previously outlined, Wallace was initially employed by A&G Price Ltd of Thames, designing small locomotives for the timber and mining industry. Obviously exhibiting talent, Prices decided to send Wallace to UK for 3 years to gain further experience and return home with promotion in mind. However, Wallace and his family settled well into the UK and he eventually decided not to return to NZ, obviously a blow to Prices who had kept in touch with him by way of regular visits. Wallace enjoyed following the UK and European rail scene, and other than frequent visits back to New Zealand during his work career, he retired in 1968 to enjoy the final days of steam in UK.
