Murder at Reefton Station

Harry 'Darkie' Whiteland was 56 years old and had been employed for the previous 14 months as a casual traffic assistant at Reefton. He was single, and born at Quetta, India (today's Pakistan). His parents were of English and Spanish descent. Early in his life Whiteland began a military career in India, prior to seeking gold in New Guinea and later on the West Coast of New Zealand. After he arrived in New Zealand in 1927 he worked and lived atWaiuta for three or four years, living in a small hut in the bush off the track heading down to the Snowy River Battery. When Waiuta closed in 1951 he moved to Reefton and worked at the Monteiths brewery. He then joined the Railways.
