The world of Islam is a mystery to most New Zealanders. Yet an increasing majority of meat exported from this country is processed according to the requirements of the Muslim religion. New Zealand is the largest exporter of Halal slaughtered sheepmeat in the world and a significant exporter of Halal slaughtered beef. New Zealand's main Halal meat markets overseas include the Middle East, Fiji, Africa, Europe, USA and Canada, and increasingly South-East Asia, especially Malaysia and Indonesia. Halal trade is now worth about $150 million per annum.
