Cobie had said let's get out of the city. Neither of us knew where the hell to go, but now that we had an automobile we were going. It took us two days just to get to the San Joaquin Valley through the coastal range. We stayed at a little inn they've got set up there off the highway. Casa de Fruta, they called the place, where the proprietor waltzed around serving the coffee. As soon as you sat down he'd be there. He flipped your cup in its saucer with one hand - the cup did a jump before it landed with a happy little click - and poured your joe with the other. The Valley was another story. Flat and dry. Baking hot. A couple of places wouldn't serve us, one in Stockton where there's a lot of Chinese so what the hell and one in Dinuba. I wasn't doing so great with the heat.
