NSF's Director Ready To Push 1999 Budget

Is it too good to be true? That's the question officials of the National Science Foundation are asking themselves about the 10 percent budget increase that the Clinton administration is requesting from Congress for fiscal year 1999. At $3,773 billion, NSF's budget would be its largest ever-and the $344-million increase would be the biggest funding hike ever bestowed on the agency's bottom line in any given year. Neal Lane, director of NSF, expressed amazement at the request, but pledged that the agency will use the money carefully and productively if Congress sees fit to go along with the White House's budget request.
