The manufacture of musical instruments is sometimes thought of as still being accomplished by the traditional handicraft mode of relying on the skills of specialized craftsmen, because the manufactured musical instruments are much more elaborate than ordinary manufactured products, and they involve intricate manufacturing processes. Naturally, there are some masterpiece types of musical instruments which are manufactured in small lots by traditional methods as in the past. However, about 1,200,000 musical instruments are estimated as manufactured annually throughout the world, and one-third of this number, or about 400,000 units, are manufactured in Japan. This massive number necessarily transcends the manufacture of musical instruments by artisans, and the manufacturers are engaged intensively in research to come out with innovative modernized industrial manufacturing methods to produce these musical instruments.
