Tattooing for health purposes? Circle tattoos on a 1000-year-old Peruvian mummy have been found to contain burnt plant material. This may have been part of an ancient healing practice based on similar principles to acupuncture.rnThe female mummy was found in the desert at Chiribaya Alta in southern Peru in the early 1990s. She bears two distinct types of tattoos: those representing animals and other symbols on her hands, arm and lower left leg, while an asymmetric pattern of overlapping circles is present on her neck.
