How I got where I am

Michelle Fernandes studied medicine at the University of Bangalore in India and completed a doctorate in psychiatry at the University of Oxford, where she is now a research fellow. Earlier this year her team won the Oxford Entrepreneurs "Idea Idol" competition with FoetoH, a portable pregnancy monitor. What did you get up to during your doctorate that wasn't directly to do with your research? I was welfare officer at my college, and then went on to become junior dean. In my second year I lived in a village In rural South India, collecting data and volunteering at the antenatal clinic as a junior doctor. In my third year, I volunteered with an international NGO and also worked on a study investigating the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia entries.
