There's a storm coming...

Veteran Australian storm-chasing photographer Nick Moir was at home with his kids when the radars he watches religiously showed Sydney was about to get battered by unusually strong wind and rain. "I threw the kids in the car and said 'do you want to go look at a storm?'," Moir shouts to me via a speakerphone as he chases another storm through Wagga Wagga in New South Wales. Kids strapped in, he drove to Terrey Hills, which has a good view over Sydney. As he was taking this shot from a carpark, one of his daughters, Cleopatra, ran ahead to watch the storm roll in. The ridge of clouds - known as a squall line -is a stretch of shelf clouds created by a string of storms hundreds of kilometres long. "The outflow winds pass under the inflow - cold air slipping under warm air," Moir explains. 'That area, the boundary where they interact, forms these beautiful shapes."
