Time for sweet surrender. The UK has declared war on sugar, echoing the nation's successful crusade against salt. Sugar is a culprit in the worldwide obesity epidemic - but slashing the stuff poses different challenges to salt. The same UK doctors and nutrition experts who created the campaign group Consensus Action on Salt and Health have now formed Action on Sugar. CASH helped create anti-salt advertising aimed at the general public, plus year-by-year targets for food companies to reduce salt, which most met. From 2001 to 2011, average UK salt intake dropped by 15 per cent.
