Extended MHEG-5 seeks ETSI support

Backers of the MHEG-5 standard for interactive television, used by both Freeview and Freesat in the UK, are seeking approval from the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) for additional features covering HDTV and return-path capability. At the same time, there are moves to integrate software that is being developed for Freesat - such as that which enables the BBC's online iPlayer to run over the digital-satellite platform's set-top boxes - into the standardisation process. Standardising these functions would make it easier for them to be deployed on other platforms.
