SES sees Sky SD switch-off in 2018

British pay-television operator BSkyB will be in a position to switch off its standard-definition broadcasts and just use high-definition transmissions by 2018 and possibly as early as 2016, according to satellite operator SES Astra.rnSES Astra president and chief executive Romain Bausch said this week that he expected the operator, which is one of SES Astra's largest customers, to deploy enough high-definition set-top boxes over the next seven to nine year to make an SD switch-off viable.rnSpeaking at the Digital TV World Summit, organized by Informa Telecoms & Media, Bausch said: "It is unlikely to come straight from them, but if I listen to our sources then Sky will be able to switch off its standard-definition broadcasts by between 2016 and 2018."rnBSkyB declined to comment on Bausch's statements.
