Resilin: a new biocompatible rubber protein

Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) has developed a method to produce recombinant resilin proteins and technology to cross-link them into insoluble materials, opening up a range of medical manufacturing opportunities. Resilin is a protein found in insects such as fleas and dragonflies, and acts as an elastic energy store. Dr Chris Elvin, of CSIRO's Biomedical Materials research team, has produced a recombinant form of resilin and developed a method to cross-link this protein solution into insoluble materials such as rubber.
