Massive Crane Lifts Stockton Bridge Arch

The main arch of the North Shore footbridge across the River Tees at Stockton was successfully launched last Friday despite incessant rain. Onlookers braved the elements to see the 170t, 120m span main arch lowered into place using the UK's largest mobile crane. The operation happened between the early hours of Friday morning and Friday lunchtime, creating an immediate impact on the local skyline. "Today is a major milestone in the project. We've lifted the main arch which is 170t - it's a significant event," said White Young Green project manager Peter Wood. "We've still a long way to go, installing decking, handrailing and lighting but we hope that in years to come the structure will become iconic in its own right." The main arch is echoed by its smaller sister which was lifted into place in July. The smaller arch spans 60m to an off-centre pier and from there the main arch spans a further 120m. The main arch is approximately 32m high.
