Why we must uphold academic standards

I do not doubt that civil engineering surveyors play a key role in all stages of construction and attempt to minimise unnecessary wastes of time, resources and money, but what of their knowledge and understanding of engineering principles? We have just seen a paper, by Anwar & Richards in Proceedings, proclaiming the future domination of professional qualifications by the USA. We need to uphold the standards within this Institution and the Engineering Council to ensure achieving the status of chartered engineer remains worthwhile.
