Cisco last week unveiled an 802.11n wireless LAN access point designed to simplify enterprise deployments, lower costs and improve performance for existing 802.11g and 802.11a wireless clients. At the same time, Cisco Capital launched new programs to help companies finance large-scale 802.11n deployments, including 25% trade-in credits to entice buyers to swap out their existing WLAN gear. The new Aironet 1140 access point uses the same mounting hardware as Cisco's existing Aironet 1250 802.11n products, but it has two important additions. First, it can deliver full 802.11n performance, with data encryption active, on an existing 802.3af Power-over-Ethernet (FbE) infrastructure. Second, Cisco plans to introduce in April a feature based on an optional part of the 802.11n draft standard called beamforming.
