When Google announced the release of the Closure Compiler, it also opened up the Closure JavaScript Library. The Closure Library is what powers Gmail, Google Docs and many other Google apps. It differs from jQuery and other libraries in comprehensiveness. While jQuery must always be included in its entirety, the Closure Library expects that you'll use the Closure Compiler to remove unused functions. This frees it up to implement as much functionality as needed, rather than only choosing the most crucial components based on size restrictions.
