On Oct. 29, the special inspector general for Afghanistan reconstruction revealed a disturbing reality. As the U.S. prepared to officially withdraw from Afghanistan Aug. 31, the State Department began an effort to remove or redact more than 100,000 pieces of news and information as part of an effort to protect the identities of Afghans who had assisted America and its allies during the 20-year war, according to multiple officials.
