When the AWS (nee ASMS) program began during the 1960s, Navy Surface Missile Systems were in difficulty. The TYPHON system development had run into serious development problems and had been cancelled leaving the threats that had created the requirement for it unanswered. By then the 3T systems were at sea but experiencing operational and maintenance problems.
