From the mid-17th to mid-19th centuries, technological advances and changes in rigging, tonnage, and weaponry were influencing ship design. As designers and shipwrights built larger vessels to carry heavier armament and more cargo, they sought new approaches to increase hull strength. On both sides of the Atlantic, these men set their sights on finding designs that would support increased loads while minimizing structural stresses.
