Royal Tars: The Lower Deck of the Royal Navy, 875-1850

Jack Tar has become a hotly contested historical subject. Academic scholarship devoted to the lower deck of the British navy during the Age of Sail is divided along battle lines drawn by Marcus Rediker [Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, 1993) and N.A. M. Rodger [The Wooden World, 1996). While the former portrays naval seamen as oppressed proletariats who banded together to resist their oppression, the later insists that the navy gave masterless men discipline and camaraderie.
