This is the second volume in a series of three devoted to the evolution of the Royal Navy's 'lower deck' and covers the period from the widespread introduction of steam propulsion after 1850 to the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. The first volume had covered the period from 875 to 1850. Brian Lavery has brought together a wealth of detail from a variety of sources to analyse a period of great technical change in a Navy that had ships stationed throughout the British Empire.
