Certain features thought to be characteristic of stem cells — including the asymmetrical segregation of chromosomes at cell division — have been thrown into question. Work by Sean Morrison at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and his colleagues shows that at least one type of stem cell does not conform to some accepted theories. Their findings indicate that much previous work should be re-examined.
